A coach should be able to identify where their athlete is at and then prepare/train them for their future.
The coach would identify the potential within their athlete and then train them accordingly; knowing they’re not ready for the professionals in their current condition, but will train them one step at a time - developing them, preparing them, always pushing the bar higher, always looking to increase and push their athlete to be better - so that they’ll be able to perform their best at their event!
In the same way God also prepares/trains us for where He wants to take us and use us – He knows how you need to be in the future in order to do what He’s called you to do – so He reveals things to us that requires change in our lives – things He wants us to pay attention to – things we need to start doing – things we need to stop doing – books we need to read – priorities that need shifting – time that needs to be spent with Him – people we need to be ministering to – friends we need to stop spending time with because they’re influencing us negatively – attending church more often – loving our family and partners – helping others … in fact – if you read the Bible, you’ll discover everything that God requires of you J
There are still certain details we’ll have to ask Him which pertains to His specific will for our individual lives, and He will answer us on that, but I often find that He does so in stages - one step at a time … leading us to seek Him for that next step ... which causes us to be dependent on Him on all times.
I’m not saying that God cannot show you all at once, but I’d imagine that if God revealed His entire plan for someone’s life to them in one go, it might cause them to back off and think that everything will just unfold as God showed them, resulting in them never taking the time to pray about their decisions but will just drift casually along thinking things will fall into place … chances are they wouldn’t seek Him as much, or look to rely on Him and depend on Him for the necessary stages they’ll go through in life – they wouldn’t appreciate the process of preparation and all the learning that needs to take place as a result of that … which then renders them ineffective to disciple someone else who might be seeking guidance in that same area.
But all coaching and training would be pointless if the athlete doesn’t adhere to those instructions; resulting in him never reaching his/her maximum and probably never winning the prize at hand … and likewise my friend we too will fall short, and never excel at our event – never reach our desired goal - never be the best we can be for God … if we don’t adhere to His guidance.
So maybe you’re still busy discovering what your “event” (calling) is, or trusting God to reveal that to you … But what is it that your eternal coach (The Holy Spirit) has already been asking of you my friend as He seeks to prepare and mold you for that “event”?
… and have you been giving attention to it?
