Prayer & Evangelism Part 1 - Is it enough to evangelize?

The word evangelize means "to spread or preach the Gospel," or "bring good news." In Christianity, evangelism (or witnessing) is the act of preaching the gospel with the intention of sharing the message and teachings of Jesus Christ. In some cases, Christian missionaries travel to foreign countries to evangelize. One of the main purposes behind evangelism is to convert non-Christians to Christianity.

God's will and covenant with mankind is so important to Him, that He gave His life for it, and if you think of it, He still, continually, offers up His life/covenant ("time", attention, patience, goodness, faithfulness, love & care) towards us, each and every day ... and through the act of evangelism, we have the opportunity to share that good news with those who may not be aware of it.

The question is, is that enough ... or is there something else we should be doing alongside that as well?

In the following passages we find examples where we have been instructed by God to pray, meaning all these scenarios can be strengthened, improved and sustained through prayer (Otherwise why would the Holy Spirit instruct us to pray in those areas). So we have the opportunity to be a part of what God has set in motion by praying for others:

Jesus said to pray that God's will be done on Earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10) and that what we bind on earth will be bound in heaven (Matthew 16:19)

2 Chronicles 7:14
If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

I Timothy 2:1‭-‬4
Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

In Luke 10:2, Jesus said, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.

Ephesians 6:18‭-‬19
With all prayer and petition pray [with specific requests] at all times [on every occasion and in every season] in the Spirit, and with this in view, stay alert with all perseverance and petition [interceding in prayer] for all God’s people. And pray for me, that words may be given to me when I open my mouth, to proclaim boldly the mystery of the good news [of salvation]

Colossians 4:12
Epaphras, who is one of you, a bondservant of Christ, greets you, always laboring fervently for you in prayers, that you may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.

We know that Paul was inspired by the Holy Spirit to pray for the believers at the various churches (Ephesians 1:15-22, Colossians 1:9-18, Philippians 1:9-11, 1 Thessalonians 1:2,3, 2 Thessalonians 1:11,12. There are other passages to add to this as well). This means that he didn't only depend on the letters sent to them for their spiritual growth, he also believed that prayer was necessary)

In Acts 4:23-31, when the church came under threat their reaction was to pray:

And being let go, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: “Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them, who by the mouth of Your servant David have said: ‘Why did the nations rage, and the people plot vain things? The kings of the earth took their stand, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord and against His Christ.’

“For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done. Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.” and when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.

The bible also encourages us to be unceasing and persistent in prayer (1 Thessalonians 5:17), to continue steadfastly in prayer (Romans 12:2), to build ourselves up on our most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit (Jude 1:20)

We also know that Jesus spent time in prayer (Mark 1:35, Luke 5:16, Luke 6:12, Mark 6:46, Matthew 14:23)

Taking all of the above into consideration, the responsibility and instruction to pray is quite emphatic, and along with it, I believe, a desire from God to answer all these prayers, otherwise why tell us to pray? ... In fact, God assures us of this in the below verse:

1 John 5:14‭-‬15 AMP
This is the [remarkable degree of] confidence which we [as believers are entitled to] have before Him: that if we ask anything according to His will, [that is, consistent with His plan and purpose] He hears us. And if we know [for a fact, as indeed we do] that He hears and listens to us in whatever we ask, we [also] know [with settled and absolute knowledge] that we have [granted to us] the requests which we have asked from Him.

So to answer the question, no it's not enough to evangelize, we have to pray as well. Let the above passages serve as an encouragement and reminder to make time to pray and to make it a priority in our lives.

Amen
